The Jacksonville Jaguars have signed rookie tight end Zach Miller to a contract. Miller, 24, was the club’s sixth-round pick in the 2009 NFL Draft, the 180th pick overall.
He is the first of the team’s nine draft picks to sign a contract this year.
Miller, 6-4, 245, is only the third tight end drafted by the Jaguars in the last seven years. A former college quarterback at Nebraska-Omaha, Miller threw for 4,096 yards and 26 touchdowns while rushing for 3,122 yards and a school-record 50 touchdowns in four seasons.
A native of Wahoo, Nebraska, he rushed for a team-high 1,061 yards and 18 touchdowns as a senior. As a sophomore in 2006, he set a school single-season record with 19 rushing touchdowns.
ALEXANDER JOINS CLUB- The Detroit Lions have agreed to trade former Boise State defensive back Gerald Alexander to the Jaguars. The Lions received wide receiver Dennis Northcutt in return.
Alexander, 24, was drafted by the Lions in the second round of the 2007 NFL Draft. He started all 16 games as a rookie, but suffered a fractured vertebra five games into last season. He returned to practice with the Lions in the offseason, but Detroit has a logjam in the defensive backfield and a need at wide receiver.
Northcutt joined the Jaguars as a free agent in 2007 and in 29 games caught 88 passes for 1,146 yards and six touchdowns. He also did some work as a return man. He came into the league as a second round pick by Cleveland out of Arizona in 2000.
Jacksonville signed Torry Holt. The Jaguars also spent three of the team’s nine draft picks on receivers: Mike Thomas, Jarett Dillard and Tiquan Underwood.
