When Michael Beasley was drafted as the second overall pick of the 2008 NBA Draft, he had appeared destined for stardom. In college, Beasley had jaw-dropping stats and a body that was built for the professional level. Unfortunately, Beasley’s lack of maturity and constant smoking of weed kept him from reaching his potential with the Miami Heat.

This offseason, while the Heat were dumping contracts to attract LeBron James and Chris Bosh to town, Beasley was sent to the Minnesota Timberwolves. In Minnesota, general manager David Kahn insists there will be one big difference with Beasley: he has stopped smoking weed.

Honestly, if you’ve watched Beasley play the last two seasons, you can easily imagine him getting high before each game. He didn’t run much, he moved in slow motion with the ball, he lost focus easily and the munchies appeared to do a number on his body.

If Beasley has stopped smoking weed, at least during the NBA season, he may reach his potential. Or, perhaps, weed was the key to his game and he’ll fall off the map.

Stay tuned.
