I’ve long believed that the only thing that counts in football is wins. Not super fancy wins, and not even convincing wins. Just wins. Years afterward, no one looks back and says, “yeah, they won these many games, but they were ugly wins.” They were wins. Period.
To that end, winning the Super Bowl is the ultimate goal, and this year that fact has been underscored. After all, perfect seasons don’t mean much without a Super Bowl trophy (just ask the Patriots.) This year we had an interesting circumstance with teams using the mail-it-in-strategy and sitting out their starters in favor of keeping everyone healthy for the playoffs. This strategy worked for most of the teams using it, and it also highlighted the fact that the record books don’t mean much without that trophy. It brought to light once again that the only thing that counts is a win in the Super Bowl. Close, as my grandfather used to say, only counts in horseshoes.
