There’s an interesting phenomenon I’ve noticed in the last couple years when it comes to Brett Favre. It is simply this: Favre playing in a game makes sports casters lazy. Allow me to explain.

Like the rest of the sports world, there seems to be a polarizing effect with Favre. You like him or hate him. He’s the greatest thing since sliced bread or he’s overrated. I expect fans to be of this mindset, but for sportscasters it’s their job to call all the details of a game.
Either, the sportscaster will go on (and on) about the abilities of Favre, how he can pull a magical pass out of his bucket, or come up with an amazing play. They will focus on him to the point of losing what else happens in a game. To the point of ignoring the other players, or somehow diminishing their contributions.
The reverse is also true. If a team Favre plays on loses, well then it’s automatically his fault. I saw this all over the Internet after the Vikings lost to the Saints. The only story seemed to be “Favre threw an interception” instead of the five key fumbles that the Vikings players made. Favre’s interception wasn’t (this time) the cause of the loss. But it didn’t seem to matter. This lazy reporting bugs me, because it dumbs down the game.
In the end, Favre is just a player. He’s got records, and statistically is the greatest one we’ve seen. But he is just one of the eleven out on the field. I wonder if sportscasters have forgotten that?

I’ve waited a very long time to make my Super Bowl prediction. I needed a little time to let the hoopla of the regular season die down so I could really think about the dominant team. The obvious choice is the Colts. But the more I’ve chewed this around, the more I lean toward the Saints. Here’s why.

Saints Emotions
The Saints have had the emotional edge this entire season. People want them to win. They want the city of New Orleans, who has received such a bad deal the last few years, so have something to smile about. They want a team who has never been to the Super Bowl to go and take home the trophy.
Compare that with the (yawn) lackluster thought of the Colts and Peyton Manning winning another Super Bowl. Listen, I’m a huge Peyton fan, but I think he’s gotten a little bit too much credit for the Colts success. It isn’t all about Peyton.
Saints Errors
A lot was said about Brett Favre’s interception throw during the Vikings/Saints playoff game, but let’s not kid ourselves. The Saints played like a bunch of high schoolers who couldn’t keep their emotions in check. They had a bucket full of penalties, and yet still didn’t get called for the most important one (of hitting Favre below the knees.) But they got it out of their system. They will reign it in and use that emotion to play instead of implode.
Strategy
There’s no question that the Colts are the dominant team here. But that doesn’t always mean anything. Remember the Patriots and their “perfect season” – right up until they lost the Super Bowl to the Giants? There was no way the Pats should have lost that game. But they did.
Besides that, aren’t we giving just a little too much credit to Peyton Manning? Listen, he’s the “anti-Favre” right now. He’s likable. He’s a great player. It’s so much easier for people to agree on him. But like Favre, he’s just another player. He’s not a football mastermind. All the Saints have to do is get in his face all day and they will shake him up like they did Favre. If they do this, they will win.

Fox Sports says Roland Hedberg was hit in the “hit in the back of the head by a puck during a junior game.” He was hit and then fell to the ice. Within ten seconds, he was attended to by someone who happened to be an off-duty ambulance driver, but to no avail.
Stories like this make you have a real appreciation for how dangerous sports really are.

The Saints played their hearts out, and they deserved to win. I’ve never seen a team make such a gutsy move as that second half onside kick. No team has ever done an onside kick in the Super Bowl except in the fourth quarter. The Saints made history by doing that, and it turned the entire game around for them.
Now, Reggie Bush can finally get a ring! (Can a ring of a different kind be far behind? Now that he’s won the Super Bowl, you know Kim Kardashian will be looking to him for a ring of her own.)

Apparently Peyton Manning can only be a sports gentlemen when he’s winning and being adored. When he throws an interception that loses a championship game, he stomps off the field like a three-year old at daycare.

That’s what he did after the Super Bowl on Sunday. He threw an interception. His team lost, and instead of staying until the end of the game and shaking hands to congratulate the winners, he ran to the locker room and didn’t talk to anyone. In a news conference after the game, he still had a hard time congratulating the Saints. Fox Sports reports that when he was was “asked what New Orleans did to disrupt Indianapolis’ offensive rhythm, Manning said, “I think I’d have a hard time saying that … We stopped ourselves for the most part.”
There’s no doubt the Colts’ play was not up to par, but the Saints played extremely well. The Colts didn’t just lose, the Saints played well enough to beat them. There’s a big difference.
When pressed about his hasty exit from the field, Manning said, “I certainly congratulate all their players and the Saints organization. I’ll speak to Drew and Sean. They deserve all the credit.” He had to be coaxed just to get this out. But calling them after, on his own special time to congratulate them? Bad form. Take your licks like a champion. Congratulate the team that beat you at the moment they deserve to hear that congratulations.
Manning acted every bit the spoil sport and not like a four-time league MVP. I like Manning and this behavior was very disappointing to see.

What a sad event to kick off the Olympic games. Nodar Kumaritashvili, a Georgian luge competitor, died after his sled went off the track just hours before the opening ceremonies. According to People, International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge (pictured), broke down at a press conference announcing the death, saying, “This is indeed a sad day. I have no words to say.”

Kumaritashvili was just 21 years old. He was at the Whistler Sliding Centre in Whistler in British Columbia when he went off the track and “crashed into a steel pole at 90 mph.” Kumaritashvili ranked 44th in the standings.

The Midwest, and East Coast of the U.S. has been buried in winter weather the last few weeks. Too bad we can’t shove some of that snow up to Vancouver. People reports that the area has had “spring-like conditions.” So much so that they’ve had to hire out someone to get more snow for some of the snowboarding and skiing competitions. They are also “using a dry ice tubing system to keep the courses frozen.”

Isn’t that always the way? Just when you think you’ve chosen the right place for the Olympics, Mother Nature decides to have a little fun. Mother Nature apparently doesn’t realize that winter can be had artificially now. At a cost, of course. I suppose that goes to show that you still can’t beat Mother Nature.

It’s Valentine’s Day, and since one of my other jobs is writing about dating, I couldn’t help putting in a little bit about love and the Olympics. The “love stories” at this year’s games aren’t the traditional bit you’d expect. In fact, it seems that lovebirds are more often pitted against each other this year.

People reports that Amanda Evora and Jeremy Barrett, who are an item and in love off the ice, will skate separately. The funny thing? They are pairs skaters. Too bad they couldn’t “pair up” instead of compete against each other.
Speedskaters Jill Rookard and Trevor Marsicano met and fell in love while training, and yet they will also compete against each other.
I don’t know how competition works in your house, but my husband and I can barely play Taboo some nights without a little tension! Should be an interesting few days for the Olympic lovebirds.

The Detroit Lions has a better season last year than the year before, but when you’ve lost every single game of the year that isn’t saying much. They did some hard work in finally getting rid of GM Matt Millen, they have a hot new quarterback, but as NBC sports points out, they still had to lower season ticket prices for the upcoming year. “In 2009 four of the Lions’ eight regular-season home games failed to sell out and were blacked out on local television.”

Season tickets are important because a sellout means the game is televised in the local area. More people seeing the game in person or on TV can help drum up support of the team. That means more jersey sales, more game tickets, more rallying for the team. All important factors in football.
More important, however, is a good team. The Lions have made a start by hiring a new coach and great quarterback. While they have other great players, they still don’t play as a cohesive team. They don’t gel. Is that the players fault or the coach’s? A little of both. In the off-season they need to work on getting protection for their quarterback, and on a defense that can pass rush.
When a team has been down for so long, I think it takes a minimum of four years to set it back on the right track again. A year to get a new coach and management. A year to find a quarterback and break him in so he performs. A year to get the rest of the team gelling. All the while, the team is winning more, slowly but surely. By the third year they finally have a winning season. By the fourth year, they are in the playoffs. By that estimate, the Lions have about three more to go before we see them at the top of the NFC North.

You’ve heard of racial profiling, but what about jersey profiling? Specifically, what about wearing one team’s jersey while traveling through the city of another team? That’s what Alyson Galen, a Dallas fan, claims happened to her when she walked through the Philly Airport.

She had on a Jason Witten jersey (first of all, she should have had Romo’s pink jersey on, then they might have thought she was Jessica Simpson and left her alone.) But no, instead she was asked to step aside by the airport screener and asked, “how’s it feel to be a Cowboys fan in Philadelphia.” Here’s a video with Galen describing her ordeal.

I can’t help wondering if all this could have been avoided by a better Philly season! After all, then the poor airport folks would have taken pity on a Cowboy’s fan. You think?
