ASHEVILLE — College football fans eager to see offensive fireworks were treated Saturday at Brevard College’s season opener against Edward Waters at Asheville High as the Tornados and Tigers combined for 80 points and close to 700 yards.
The Tornados seemed to score at will but couldn’t keep the Tigers out of the end zone either. In the end Brevard prevailed 53-27 in front of 1,420 fans in a game that lasted 2 hours, 56 minutes.
In the past two season openers against Edward Waters, the Tornados have put up 104 points, winning last year’s game 51-6.
On Saturday, Brevard’s rushing game was unstoppable as it accounted for 331 of the 459 total yards of offense. Leading the way was freshman Kelvin Jeter, a former Forestview High standout, who had just five carries for 121 yards and a touchdown.
Senior Neville Bryce also had a rushing touchdown for BC, and fullback Derek Church, a former Franklin High standout, had two touchdowns. He finished with eight carries and 57 yards.
After a close first quarter in which Brevard led 14-13, the Tornados exploded in the second quarter, outscoring Edward Waters 25-0 to take a commanding 39-13 lead at the break.
Senior quarterback Michael Crumbaker had a productive day through the air, going 6-for-9 for 128 yards and a touchdown.
