The decade is quickly drawing to an end (I seriously cannot believe that this went by so fast!) and it’s time to look back and reflect on the biggest names in hockey in the past 10 years. I saw a list over on TSN but I’m sure that you will have a few to add.

For me, the first choice is obvious – Martin Brodeur. This goaltender continues to amaze after all this time. It’s pretty incredible. He has more wins and shutouts than any other netminder over this past decade and he breaks so many records, it’s easy to lose count. He holds the all-time record for most shutouts (a ridiculous 104) and the man has won the Vezina Trophy four times and has had his name etched on Lord Stanley twice.
While it’s true that some will automatically think of Sidney Crosby and Alexander Ovechkin, who have accomplished a great deal in their short careers, it’s hard for me to completely include them since they’ve been playing for less than half a decade.
Meanwhile, a guy like Jarome Iginla has managed to stay relatively consistent over the years (yes, I realize some seasons were better than others). He has scored more goals than any other player in this past decade and he has taken home the Lester B. Pearson, Art Ross and Rocket Richard Trophies. He was the runner up for the Hart Trophy twice and has made it on to the All-Star team three times. Throw in his appearances at the Olympics and you’ve got a major contender for the best player of the decade.
What do you think? Nicklas Lidstrom is another player who comes to mind since I think he’s probably going to go down as one of the best defencemen of all time.
