Now that the Wildcard games have been decided, it’s time to look at the first round of playoffs. The AFC has some of the strongest teams this year that I’ve seen in a long time, and with surprises like the red hot Jets, who knows what will happen. We can only speculate. Here are my predictions.
NY Jets versus SD Charges
Winner: Chargers
I’ll admit that choosing the Chargers right now when I’ve just admitted that the Jets are red hot might seem like insanity. Maybe it is. But I believe there are teams that can get red hot and end up burning themselves out. I see that happening with the Jets this year. Quarterback Mark Sanchez is young, talented, and cocky. Didn’t you just want to smack him at the press conference last week? And Rex Ryan’s prediction that the Jets will take it all is a bold one.
The combination of these two things make me lean towards San Diego, who has won its last eleven games. The Jets defense will make this a close one, but San Diego will squeak out a win.
Baltimore Ravens versus Indianapolis Colts
Winner: Colts
Many are writing off the Colts right now because of their “rest the starters” mentality toward the end of the season. But while I have the utmost respect for John Harbaugh and what he’s done with the Ravens, I still believe in the professionalism of the Colts. The Colts may make a slower than usual start, but they are winners, and will do what it takes to get to the next level. This game will be close in the first half, with the Colts dominating the second half.
