This first season away from the Montreal Canadiens hasn’t been completely stellar for former captain, Saku Koivu.  Granted, he has registered 10 goals and 19 assists in 42 games this season, which is actually a little better than I was expecting, but it’s still not great.

Now, Koivu has suffered a sprained right knee and is expected to be on the bench for the next 1-2 weeks.  With that expected recovery time, he should be fine to represent Team Finland at the Vancouver Olympics next month (they chose him to be the captain) but who knows how good he’ll actually be.

Hopefully, the rest of the Finnish players stay healthy since Koivu will be on the mend, Jere Lehtinen suffered an upper body injury this week and it’s unclear whether Teemu Selanne will be able to play at all since a deflected puck broke his jaw in a victory over Boston this past Wednesday.  Since they are predicting that it will take a month for him to recuperate, it’s very likely that it will affect his participation at the Olympics.
