Pacqui Kelly, wife of Cincinnati head coach Brian Kelly, and Jeni Thomas, wife of AD Mike Thomas, hosted the event… The West Georgia at Wingate game on Aug. 29 has been designated as United Way of Caring Day with portions of game proceeds going to the United Way.
The 2009 Ohio State Athletics Hall of Fame class, which was announced June 23, will include former Buckeye football players All-American Neal Colzie, All-American and Butkus Award winner Andy Katzenmoyer, Dick LeBeau and Pandel Savic.
The National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) announced the 29 winners of the Under Armour AD of the Year Award June 16. Among those awarded were Tim Curley (Penn State), Damon Evans (Georgia), Lawrence Cunningham (Tulsa), Sandy Barbour (Cal), Lee McElroy (Albany), Sam Baker (Georgia Southern), Bill Rowe (Missouri State), Terry Wanless (Sacramento State), Edward Matejkovic (West Chester (Pa.)), Suzanna Sanregeret (Michigan Technological), Susan Petersen Lubow (U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (N.Y.)), Bill Blazer (Ohio Dominican), Dan Harris (Baker University (Kan.)) and Bruce Parker (Carroll College (Mont.)
NACDA’s 2009- 10 executive committee includes athletics directors Warde Manuel, Buffalo; Ed McLean, Fayetteville State University (N.C.); John Scarpino, Seminole (Okla.) Community College; Joe Tutt, South Plains (Texas) College; and John Volek, Sierra College. Missy Conboy, deputy athletics director, Notre Dame; Patty Viverito, commissioner, Missouri Valley Conference; and Dan Beebe, commissioner, Big 12 Conference were named as at-large representatives. NACDA also selected Florida State AD Randy Spetman to serve as president for the 2009-10 year.
Former Temple football letterman Bill Cosby received the Beacon of Hope award, given as part of the Gillette Civil Rights weekend on June 20 during a game between the Cincinnati Reds and Chicago White Sox.
Oregon has unveiled new uniforms for the 2009 season. The latest editions have improved ergonomics and ventilation characteristics, will feature laminate numbers that don’t soak up moisture and have an 85-percent weight differential compared to traditional uniforms. The Ducks will have the option of 80 different jersey combinations during the 2009 campaign.
The Collegiate Licensing Company, a division of IMG Worldwide, announced it has reached an agreement with UCLA to manage its trademark licensing program effective July 1… The deadline to renew membership in the Football Writers Association of America has been extended to July 10.
After 28 years in the same location, the Cotton Bowl Athletic Association is moving next month. Effective July 9th, the CBAA offices will be located in the new Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
Ed Thomas, 58, the 2005 NFL High School Coach of the Year and head coach at Aplington-Parkersburg (Iowa) HS for 34 of his 37 seasons, died last week…Ed McMahon, 86, who was member of the Liberty Bowl’s board of directors in its original Philadelphia location, died last week in Los Angeles… Longtime Vermont and Hartwick coach and administrator Hal Greig, 79, has died… Former high school football player and renowned pitchman Billy Mays passed away in Tampa at age 50.
