During a time when the Montreal Canadiens are busy wheeling and dealing players, owners and staff members, I don’t know if anyone feels particularly safe. Fortunately, one player can relax for the rest of the summer knowing that his Habs jersey will be waiting for him in the fall.

Tomas Plekanec has been given a one-year deal worth .75 million which allows the restricted free agent to avoid salary arbitration.

I’m glad to see him back in the lineup and I’m sure fans are happy to have at least a couple familiar faces staying on the roster.

The 26-year-old has played in 80 games with the Habs and scored 20 goals and 19 assists but had his beat season with the team in 2007-08, when he posted 29 goals and 69 points.

I don’t know if it’s fair to say that he struggled this year, though, because the whole team seemed to fall apart. With big trades coming in next season, he’ll get a smaller role (but might be a little overpaid, in my opinion) and I think he’ll fare better. I wonder what kind of chemistry he’ll generate with Mike Cammalleri (sent from Calgary).
