World Sports News:Theoren Fleury Attacks the Calgary Flames

It’s a funny thing – just the other day I was talking to a complete stranger about how crappy it was for the Calgary Flames to refuse to give Theoren Fleury a second chance after he performed so well during the preseason. I’m guessing Fleury also thought he got the shaft because he ripped the team on his blog.
It seemed like the comeback of a lifetime. Fleury had been a huge hero here in Calgary but his life fell apart because of his drug addiction and wild behavior. He recently revealed, in his autobiography, that he was raped by a coach as a teenager and after cleaning his life up, he suited up and asked to be put back on the team.
The city was completely behind him and when he scored goals in every game (including a game winner in a shootout) it felt like he was about to get his fairytale ending. When GM Daryl Sutter announced that they were cutting Fleury, I was horrified. I felt like he could have given the guy a one year deal but I guess he didn’t agree.
After seeing how some of the signed players have performed this year, Fleury wrote: “At one hundred and eighty pounds, I finished 11th out of 56 guys at camp in the fitness test and scored a historic shootout goal in an exhibition game after being out of hockey for six years. What does that say about the talent level in the NHL? 4 points and a plus 4 rating in four exhibition games and I get cut. What a joke! Craig Conroy goes the first 37 games of the season with zero goals. I wonder how many I would have had? Even with all the stupid people that run the game of hockey, it’s still a great game. Go figure.”
Among his other zingers was that he felt the team should “trade Robyn Regehr and finally get someone for Iggy to play with.”
Ouch – but the man does have a point…
