Another one bites the dust.  It’s been just over a week since the New York Rangers walked away from Nikolai Zherdev’s salary arbitration ruling (he was asking for .75, was offered less than .2 but was awarded .9 million through arbitration).  Rangers GM Glen Sather basically said that the team didn’t need Zherdev after the deals they’ve made this summer.  I’d have to agree.

Zherdev had 58 points (23 goals, 35 assists) in the 82 games he played with the Rangers last season but failed to get on the board in any of their seven playoff games.  He was picked fourth overall in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft by the Columbus Blue Jackets.

In a not so shocking turn of events, Zherdev is the latest player to sign with the Russian KHL league.  He’s supposed to be signing Salavatovo Yuleav Ufa which means that he’ll be playing with fellow former NHL players, Alexander Perezhogin and Alexander Radulov.

Maybe this is what Zherdev, a native of the Ukraine, wanted all along.  Maybe he asked for a ridiculous amount of money (sorry, but I think .75 million is way too much for him) and pushed for a salary arbitration in hopes of becoming an unrestricted free agent so that he could sign with the KHL.  Stranger things have happened (like Theoren Fleury asking to come back to the NHL).
